| ICELANDIC SHEEP ARE ONE OF THE OLDEST AND PUREST BREEDS OF SHEEP, BEING AROUND FOR 1100 YEARS THE BREED IS TRIPLE-PURPOSE, BEING TREASURED FOR ITS MEAT, FIBER, AND MILK. THE MEAT IS VERY TENDER AND LEAN WITH A MILD FLAVOR AND IS DESCRIBED AS GOURMET MEAT. THE FACE AND LEGS ARE FREE OF WOOL, THE FLEECE IS DUAL-COATED WITH A SOFT UNDERCOAT CALLED THE THEL AND THE COARSER LONGER OUTER COAT IS CALLED THE TOG. FLEECES ARE LOW IN LANOLIN AND WEIGHT LOSS WHEN WASHED IS MUCH LESS THAN WITH OTHER BREEDS TRIPLETS ARE NOT UNCOMMON IS THIS BREED AND EWES ARE VERY CAPABLE OF NURSING THEM WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. |
